Rather è d'uso abbastanza formale e dà spesso una sfumatura negativa: fa piuttosto freddo qui dentro = it's rather cold in here. Fairly, quite e somewhat non introducono alcuna connotazione: sta piuttosto bene = he's fairly well; il suo ultimo romanzo è piuttosto bello = her lastest novel is quite good; il prezzo è piuttosto alto = the price is somewhat high. Pretty è usato soprattutto nell'inglese americano e nella lingua parlata: quell'attrezzo è piuttosto utile = that tool is pretty useful.1 (invece, anzi) instead; chiedi piuttosto ad Ada ask Ada instead; perché non dici piuttosto che non hai voglia di farlo? why don't you just say that you don't want to do it?2 (alquanto) rather, quite, fairly, somewhat; piuttosto deludente, infastidito rather disappointing, annoyed; sto piuttosto bene qui I'm quite content here; piuttosto spesso quite o fairly often; in modo piuttosto ironico somewhat ironically; sono piuttosto di fretta I'm in rather a hurry3 (più spesso) qui piove piuttosto d'estate che d'inverno here it rains more during the summer than during the winter4 piuttosto che, di (anziché) rather than; preferisco camminare piuttosto che prendere l'autobus I prefer to walk rather than to take the bus. -
